This is an interior design project for the Steinway & Sons Tokyo showroom located in Shinagawa, Tokyo.
Since its foundation in 1836, Steinway & Sons has obtained over 125 patents for piano structure and created a norm for piano production. Since then, its craftsmanship has been passed on until today.
The beautiful sound of the piano is produced by the 20 tons of tensile force that pulls the piano. 1200 stainless wires, almost the same number of parts that consist the Steinway & Sons piano, are stretched vertically across the façade of the showroom. The same tensile force of the wire invisible to the eye brings a feel of tranquility and stiffness just like what you would see inside of an elaborately crafted piano.
Also, the minimal spacing of the wires creates a moiré effect when moving in front of the screen. The wires seem to sway as if the entire façade is performing music.
Inside the tuning room, a master piano tuner tuning the piano could be seen. Even when the piano is left inside the room, you would still be able to embrace the beautiful piano under the spotlight. Through its appearance during daytime and at night, the space itself becomes a “showcase” for the master art piece completed by works of fine craftsmanship and times spent.

スタインウェイピアノは１８３６年創業以来、ピアノ構造上の特許を１２５以上取得し、ピアノづくりの規範を作り上げてきた。そしてそのクラフトマンシップは現代にも受け継がれている。
ピアノには20トンもの弦張力がかかり、それによりピアノの響きが生まれている。このファサードには、スタインウェイピアノ構成部品数とほぼ同じ１２００本のステンレスワイヤーを張り巡らせた。ワイヤーにかけられた眼には見ることのできない張力は、精巧に作りあがられたピアノ内部のような静謐さ・緊張感を空間にもたらす。
また、細かなピッチのワイヤーは、スクリーンの前を通るとモアレ現象を生み出す。すると、スクリーンが揺れているように感じられ、あたかもファサードが音楽を奏でているかのように見える。
チューニングルームでは、一流の調律師がピアノを仕上げている姿が見えるようにした。
調律時以外は、スポットライトを浴びたピアノを、建物外からも望むことができる。昼夜を通して、この空間自体が、クラフトマンシップを駆使し年月をかけて完成された芸術作品ともいえるピアノの「ショーケース」となる。
